Great concept on paper, but has problems
I'm fully invested in the Dewalt 20V cordless platform and until now each tool that I own has been decent, if not superb.

This tool has a few problems. First off it's defective; it worked for all of 90 seconds before it started cutting out on low speed. I'm confident it can be repaired under warranty or be replaced.

That aside, if you don't like the impact clutch setting well that's too bad. It's underpowered for driving things as small as #8x1-1/2" hex head screws into wood. And yes, the business end of it IS compact but I keep finding that the battery gets in the way. I also have a DC809 and find that it performs much better, and the smaller size of the 850 wasn't as much of a benefit as I thought. If you're trying to decide between those two tools, go with the 809.

I love this little guy!
Coming from using Makita cordless the last 20+ years (contractor - home renovations, I was in the market for a new drill. Decided to try the new impact - this 850 - as it was compact, yet strong. Dewalt used their sneaky witchcraft and I wound up investing another $800 in other 20V tools. I'll keep the Makita (LXT 18V) stuff as a back up but I'm more than satisfied with Dewalt and especially this impact drill. It works great.

Not sure about the review of blistering your finger removing the bit. I haven't encountered any issues. I also love the quick release feature and quick install on the impact drill. It automatically locks in and releases so much easier than Makita. Great design!

Product Overheating
Product gets very hot on the tool head after only 60 seconds of operation. Workers are unable to swap driver bits because the bit holder and tool head are so hot. Very concerning at our shop.

Gotta stick up for this Little Guy!
I don’t normally take the time to write reviews, but when I saw the 2.7 star rating for this guy, I had to speak up. (Granted, if you look at the other versions of this tool—bare tool, powerstack kit, etc—you will see that they have solid 4.5-5 star ratings, but for some reason this version has some bad reviews).

This is HANDS DOWN the best all-around impact driver you can have on your jobsite. I’ve preferred Dewalt over Makita and Milwaukee, and once you buy the batteries, you’re committed. I had the DCF885 for years, and never had a complaint, but when I saw the tiny little 850 with the SAME torque rating, I had to give it a shot! I was not disappointed. It performed every bit as well as the 885, in both screw driving torque (it drives 3/8 x 10” structural screws into wet PT lumber no problem) and battery life (it will run on one of the new 1.7ah for longer than it takes to charge the second one).

The stubby little head lets me face screw inside of joist bays and in places I never could have reached with the 885. I will agree with the guy who says it gets HOT! The smaller head doesn’t dissipate heat as quickly as the larger drivers, so if you’re screwing deck boards in the afternoon sun…wear some gloves, or just be careful around the metal bits.

I normally use it with the 1.7ah powerstacks, and it’s it’s a light, well-balanced feel. The three torque settings are great, too-#1 is perfect for cabinets and finish work (I suspect the guy that was having trouble driving #8 screws had it on this setting).

And, like the 885, this guy is pretty near indestructible. I've dropped it onto concrete from 20 feet up a ladder, used it to prop up 2x12s while I cut them and flipped it around to bang in 5/8" carriage bolts (don't judge, you know you've done it too!)

My ONLY complaint is it seems like the quick- change collar is a little janky. I’ve had to replace the spring twice because it broke and stopped holding down the ball that locks the bits in. But that’s a cheap and easy fix…
